Dog Park News and Announcements

Groundbreaking News

The City of Eureka is ready to break ground on the Eureka Dog Park!!!

The park is approved, the plans are drawn up, and the location is all set.  The construction flags marking the corners of the fences are even in place.

Why isn’t the park open yet?  What’s missing? The fencing, signs, wheelchair accessibility, parking, and a bathroom.

The Eureka Dog Park is being built entirely by donations of time, labor, resources, and money by local dog lovers and businesses.  The heavy equipment is set to move this summer as soon as we raise enough money.  Yes, you read that correctly.  This summer.  The summer of 2010.  So open your wallet, your checkbook or use your keyboard to donate today!  Let’s get this park built!!!

Jeff Leonard has arranged a clean up day at Hammond Park (14th and E Streets) on Saturday May 8th starting around 9AM. The dog park committee will be there to spread the word about the dog park, sign up volunteers and collect donations. Come and join us - wear your grubby jeans and help clean up the park!

The Dog Park is starting to feel like a reality.

Frank, Kathy, Cindy, Steven, & Amy met at the site in late March .  The dogs (Bernie, Samson, Lily, Tizzy, Bogger, and Porter) romped and played off-leash (except Bernie the Beagle who needs a fence so he doesn't chase woodland creatures).  We took pictures and a little video of the site to use in our promotions.

We are going to bombard the community with TV, radio, letters to the editor, and letters to businesses in the coming weeks.  Thanks to Real Solutions, your local residential energy efficiency experts, a 60 second commercial will be professionally produced.  It will begin airing on Access Humboldt as a PSA in April.  It will air 10 times a day for 6 months.  The audio from the commercial will air on local radio stations as PSA's.   Frank & Amy will begin giving presentations to the rotary clubs in mid-April.  Hopefully we will see a huge increase in awareness and support.

We are still working on being part of Spirit of the North Coast and getting articles in the newspaper.
The currently invisible fence looks a little more real this week.  When we arrived we got to see the flags showing where the edges of the park are as well as the corners of the fences for the different areas.  The flags aren't all easy to find...but they are there!!!  Go check them out!

Our next meeting is April 30th at 7pm.  Please join us!!!

Keep your eyes peeled for the Eureka Dog Park donations jars at local merchants and Eureka City Hall.

The committee will be sponsoring a rummage sale on May 22. More info to follow.

The next Dog Park Committee meeting is Friday December 18th at 7PM at the Adorni Center. Please join us.

The Eureka Dog Park will have an information and donation table Thursday December 3rd at the Gazebo in Old Town for the Christmas Tree lighting at 5pm.  We'll be by the bike racks near where Restoration Hardware used to be.  There will be music, Santa, the tree lighting, and all the shops will be open.  Come on down and say hi, see the lights, and do some holiday shopping!  Leashed, well behaved dogs welcome.

We'll also be at the City of Eureka's Annual Holiday Bazaar this Saturday December 5th from 10-4.  The bazaar is inside the Adorni center so dogs are not allowed at this event.  It is however a warm indoor event for a chilly Humboldt County Day.  Come by, say hi, and get some of your Holiday shopping done.

Saturday night, (Saturday December 5th from 6-9pm) we'll be at Arts Alive.  We'll be set up right by the Redwood Tree facing "F" Street.  Again, come by, say hi, and enjoy a night on the town.  Leashed, well-behaved dogs welcome.

Tell all of your friends to come by.  Every donation helps us get closer to building the fence for the dog park.  Help us get the word out.  We look forward to seeing and talking with you!!!!

The Dog Park Committee members will be at the Open Spaces / Parks and Rec meeting at the Adorni Center on Thursday, October 8th at 6PM. The public is welcome.

Arts Alive! on October 3rd was a big success. The generous folks of Eureka donated $241.30 to the cause. We added many names to our email list also. It is very obvious that the community is in favor of having a dog park! Check out the new photos in our photo gallery of our doggie fundraisers.

The design plans for the dog park are now online. You can view them here
